Ekiti Private Schools Protest Against 1,000 Naira Levy

 

Private school owners in Ekiti State have embarked on a three-day warning strike over the 1,000 Naira education levy on each pupil by the state government to further generate revenue for the state.
The Ekiti State government came out with a 1,000 Naira education development levy to be paid by each pupil in private primary and secondary schools.

The move was considered to be multiple taxation by the private school owners and it subsequently led them to staging the protest.
The basic no-strike posture of private primary and secondary school was jettisoned with the total shut down of private schools in the state.
During the protest, the proprietors insisted that it is against every norm and another burden on the already heavy taxes from the state government.
Speaking on behalf of the school owners, President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Ekiti State, Saka Adeleye, said that it is either total removal of the due or total shutdown of schools.
Reacting to the claim, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Lanre Ogunsuyi, admitted that the government indeed issued the levy but asked for understanding from the proprietors.
