Supreme Court upholds Governor Wike's election as Rivers state governor

The Supreme Court today Wednesday, January 27, upheld the election of Nyesom Wike as the duly elected governor of Rivers State.
Wike had approached the apex court after the Appeal Court upheld the decision of Rivers State Governorship Petitions Tribunal which nullified his election on October 24, 2015. APC candidate Dakuku Peterside had won the appeal court sitting challenging Wike's election as the Rivers State governor.

The former inspector general of police in Nigeria Chief Sunday Adewusi is dead. The News discloses that Chief Adewusi died at age 79 on Tuesday night at the National Hospital, Area 11, Abuja.

Sunday Adedayo Adewusi (born, Ogbomoso, Nigeria) was a Nigerian Policeman and former Inspector General of Police. He was appointed in 1981 to succeed Adamu Suleiman and was succeeded by Etim Inyang in 1983.

EFCC Seizes Dasuki’s, Army General’s Houses In Kaduna(photos)


Property believed to belong to former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki was at the weekend confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kaduna.

Dasuki, NSA to former President Goodluck Jonathan, is at the centre of a massive investigation into the alleged misapplication of about $2.1 billion meant for the procurement of arms.
A panel, which investigated the way the money was spent, indicted Dasuki and others. The EFCC moved in. Dasuki has been arraigned in court.

Four Suicide Bombers Attack A Village In Cameroon

 
Suicide bombers affiliated with the Boko Haram sect today, January 25th attacked a village in Cameroon’s Far North region and killed at least 25 people.
According to a local official, it is the most deadly attack carried out by the Islamist militant group in the area in recent times.

CBN Reintroduces COT As Current Account Maintenance Fee

 
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has indirectly reintroduced Commission on Turnover (CoT) fee as Current Account Maintenance (CAM) Fee. Recall that the CBN in 2013 commenced phased reduction of CoT which terminated with zero CoT charge this year. But in a circular to banks last week signed by Director, Financial Policy & Regulation Department,  Mr. Kevin Amugo,  the CBN replaced the CoT with CAT but subject to maximum of N1 per N1000 (Mille).

FG To Re-visits Contracts Awarded Under Jonathan – Fashola

 
Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, at the weekend ended speculations that the current administration will revoke contracts awarded under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Fashola spoke in Abuja at the Nigerian Pension Industry Strategy Implementation Roadmap meeting.

The former Lagos governor lamented how successive governments revoked contracts of previous regimes, noting that the practice destroyed investor confidence in an economy.The minister stated that if approved contracts must be touched, the best approach was to renegotiate rather than outright revocation.

FG Removes Kerosene Subsidy, To Sell For N83 Per Litre

 
The Federal Government, weekend, hiked the price of Household Kerosene (HHK) also known as kerosene, to N83 per litre from N50 per litre, thereby, officially ending subsidy on the product. ‎

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA‎, in its product pricing template released over the weekend, however, stated that the N83 per litre price applies only to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), meaning that other petrol stations and dealers can sell higher than the stipulated amount.

EFCC Charges Tompolo In Lagos Over N22b Fraud


The Federal Government has filed fresh criminal charges against a former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Oweize Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), involving about N22,765,900,000.

The new charge, filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos, borders on stealing, advanced fee fraud and money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed the 22-count charge against Tompolo and 12 others.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Friday granted bail to the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, in the sum of N300m with two sureties in like sum.
The total bail sum is N600m.

The federal and state governments on Wednesday signed an “updated Abuja commitment” on polio eradication in Nigeria.
The Abuja commitment, which was first signed in 2009 and revalidated in 2011, is an accountability tool conceived to ensure governors keep their side of the bargain towards total eradication of polio in Nigeria.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode while addressing Lagosians yesterday January 19, 2015 at the 2nd Quarterly Town Hall said that more people would be gainfully employed, including the street urchins popularly known as “Area Boys” in order to reduce crime.
Ambode stated that ample attention will be given to their activities in order to reduce rate of crime carried out by these idle youths.
The Governor who said he prefers to call them “Good Boys” instead of “Area Boys”, insisted that the bad impression about ‘Area Boys’ could be changed for good if they were gainfully engaged.

Saliu Adetunji, The Next Olubadan, He Was Promoted 3 Weeks Ago!

 
The death has been announced of the 40th Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1. The first-class king, who ascended the throne on Friday, August 17, 2007 at the age of 93, died in his sleep on Tuesday night. His remains have been deposited at the UCH mortuary. With the demise of Oba Odugade, the next high chief to become the Olubadan is the current Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Saliu Adetunji. Oba Odulana was born April 14, 1914, in Igbo Elerin, Ibadan, to Pa Odulana Ayinla. He began his elementary education at Saint Andrew’s School, Bamigbola, Ibadan in January 1922 and transferred to St. Peter’s School, Aremo, in 1929. He completed his middle school education at Mapo Central School in 1936.

NNPC Mega Station In Dutse Engulfed By Fire

NNPC FIRE 
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega fuel station, has been engulfed by fire in Dutse, the Gombe state capital. NAN reports that the catastrophic incident happened in the evening of Tuesday, January 19.

According to a staff of the station who spoke under anonymity, a 40,000-liter tanker laden with petroleum, caught fire while offloading.

Olubadan, Oba Samuel Odulana-Odugade Dies At 101

 
The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, is dead. Palace sources said the monarch died at about 7.30pm on Tuesday in his palace in the Monatan area of Ibadan. Oba Odugade, who was born on April 14, 1914, became the Olubadan in July 2007. It was gathered that palace guards immediately summoned a son of the deceased, Prof. Femi Lana, who also informed some Ibadan high chiefs about his father’s demise. Though efforts to get the reaction of Lana were futile on Tuesday, a source close to him said the monarch’s corpse had been deposited at the morgue of an unnamed hospital in Ibadan.

VP Yemi Osinbajo Queries DG Of BPE Over Alleged Shady Contracts

The anti-corruption war of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration seem to be beaming its searchlight on government agencies and parastatals.
Many agencies have been subjected to scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since the advent of this administration in May 2015.

The latest agency whose activities are being looked into is the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), which is constitutionally under the purview of the office of the vice president, as the chairman of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP).
The Nation reports that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has queried the Director-General of the BPE, Benjamin Dikki, on the award of some contracts. which allegedly included legal and consultancy fees amounting to N1.45billion.

Falana Begs Buhari To Pardon Convicted Officers


Femi Falana, popular human rights lawyer has written a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari to grant presidential pardon to all military officers convicted of mutiny.
Some of the soldiers who were discharged and convicted for mutiny were pardoned by the president although a number are still in detention especially those the lawyer defended.
In the letter published by PM News, Falana said the only offence the soldiers committed was that they had the temerity to demand for weapons to fight the well-armed terrorists.

Today Is Nigerian Armed Forces Remembrance Day (2016)


In Nigeria, Armed Forces Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is celebrated on 15 January. It was formerly marked on 11 November of every year to coincide with the Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) for the World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations, but it was changed to 15 January of every year in Nigeria in commemoration of the surrender of Biafran troops to the Federal troops on 15 January 1970 thus signalling the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
